Discover Yummi Japan

Walking into Yummi Japan feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood diner that just happens to specialize in Japanese comfort food. The location at 255H N Equity Dr, Smithfield, NC 27577, United States makes it an easy stop whether you’re running errands nearby or planning a casual sit-down meal after work. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually when I want something fast but still freshly cooked, and the experience has been consistently satisfying in ways that matter to regular diners.

The menu is broad without being overwhelming, which is often a good sign. You’ll find staples like teriyaki chicken, hibachi steak, shrimp combinations, fried rice, noodles, and sushi rolls that cater to both beginners and seasoned fans of Japanese cuisine. One thing I’ve noticed from watching the kitchen over time is the clear, repeatable cooking process. Proteins are grilled on a flat-top with high heat, vegetables are added in stages to preserve texture, and sauces are applied last so flavors stay balanced instead of overly sweet or salty. That consistency explains why many local reviews mention reliable taste rather than dramatic ups and downs.

From a food safety and quality perspective, it’s worth noting that cooked-to-order hibachi meals align well with guidance from organizations like the USDA, which emphasizes proper internal temperatures for poultry and seafood. While diners don’t see thermometers in action, the visible cooking process offers reassurance. In my experience, chicken is always fully cooked yet still juicy, and shrimp has that firm snap that signals freshness rather than overcooking.

Sushi here tends to be straightforward rather than experimental, which suits the setting. California rolls, spicy tuna, and simple vegetable rolls dominate the lineup. A friend of mine who works in food service once pointed out that smaller restaurants often do better when they keep sushi selections focused, and that idea holds true here. Instead of chasing trends, the kitchen sticks to rolls they can execute well every time. That practical approach shows expertise more than flashy presentation ever could.

Portion sizes are generous, especially for hibachi plates that come with rice and vegetables. I once split a steak and shrimp combo with a coworker during a quick lunch break, and neither of us left hungry. That value-for-money aspect comes up repeatedly in customer reviews, and it’s one reason families and regulars keep coming back. Prices stay reasonable compared to larger sit-down Japanese restaurants, which makes this place feel approachable rather than special-occasion-only.

Service style is casual and efficient. Orders are taken quickly, and food usually arrives within a short window, even during busy hours. There’s no pressure to rush, though, which makes it comfortable to linger and talk. Over time, staff members tend to recognize repeat customers, a small but meaningful detail that builds trust and familiarity.

Of course, it’s fair to acknowledge limitations. This isn’t a destination for upscale omakase or rare imported ingredients, and the dining space itself is simple rather than atmospheric. Still, that honesty works in its favor. The restaurant knows what it is and delivers on that promise without overreaching. As one local regular once told me, fresh food made fast matters more than fancy décor most days, and this spot proves that point meal after meal.

Between its accessible location, dependable menu, and steady stream of positive reviews, Yummi Japan has carved out a solid reputation in Smithfield. It’s the kind of place you recommend without hesitation when someone asks where to grab a satisfying Japanese-style meal that fits real life rather than a special event.

  • I got the steak, scallops, and shrimp Hibachi with 3 cups of white sauce. Hands down the best Hibachi I've ever had. Absolutely delicious, I would like to take a nap now. Will definitely be here again!!

  • Very good food and not a long wait. Food always made fresh, you can see them make it, open kitchen. My favorite is the chicken hibachi and you get 1 yum yum sauce with it and the crab and cream cheese wontons. I’ve had their steak and shrimp hibachi as well, very good.
